Manchester City Defeat North African Side as Foden Shines with Goal and Assist

The Premier League side saw their European rivals such as Paris St-Germain, Bayern Munich and Chelsea win their first matches – and City made no mistake against the North African team, especially when Foden returned to form and added a goal and assist.

There were plenty of empty seats at the stadium but thousands of City fans still flocked to Lincoln Financial Field to witness a stunning performance from the England midfielder.

Pep Guardiola’s side were favourites from the start and they made the perfect start – with Foden scoring from 12-yards out within just two minutes. Then, just before the end of the first half, his corner kick was converted by Jeremy Doku.

Ballon d’Or winner Rodri, who had played only the second time since September after suffering a knee injury, came off the bench. Erling Haaland was given a rousing welcome by the fans when he came on to the field. He hit a shot from a good position and another late effort was saved by Mehdi Benabid.

The biggest name for Wydad was debutant Nordin Amrabat – who has previously played for Watford and Hull. His team created some chances with counter attacks but could not break up Ederson’s goal.

But now City will have to play without Rico Lewis for Monday’s second match against Al Ain (02:00 BST) after he was red carded after his boot struck Samuel Obeng in the face while tackling for a loose ball.
